Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality
Macaws are an excellent companion bird. They are intelligent and affectionate. They are best with well-rounded families. They can easily become bored and will find ways to entertain themselves if their owners are not engaging with them enough often. Macaws who aren't properly socialized can become aggressive and may even bite. It is important to establish clear boundaries to ensure that the macaw does feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are active birds who love to play, climb and interact. They should spend at least 2 to 3 hours every day outside to keep their minds stimulated and for physical exercise. They love playing games, listening to music and learning tricks. They love going to parks and playgrounds as well as hiking, local restaurants and bars. They are not only a wonderful pet, but they are also a wonderful pet for children.
Despite their adoring nature however, these birds can be loud and can be a distraction for those living near. They can make ear-shattering screeches and loud cries, which could be disruptive to those who live in apartments or condos.
This species is also monomorphic. Females and males can be difficult to distinguish. Due to this the only way to reliably identify sex is through DNA testing. Once sex is established pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding may begin.
Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to master commands, phrases and tricks. This is not a quick process, and it's essential that the pet's owner is patient and understands that this is not a task to be taken lightly. Positive reinforcement can to speed up the process and can help to correct any behavioral issues.
Lolita's care
For decades activists have been calling for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, marine biologists hoped that Lolita might have a similar fate. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to go back to the ocean.
Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her in danger. They cause harm to her health by forcing Lolita to perform for tourists. They overexert her with high-speed circle and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. Additionally, they place her in an incredibly small tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.
In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, promised to work on a plan with a group of Lolita supporters known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to transport her to open water eventually. The plan would have included a facility in Washington's west coast, where she could live for the rest of her life, receive human care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami house and surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.
If the plan had been implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild, killers whales are social animals who are close to their families until they die. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for 40 years. The nation's most active activists, including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network, have called for her departure from Seaquarium's stage and eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

After years of pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a seaside sanctuary where she can swim deep in the water and possibly even be reunited with her orca mother. These plans came too late to save the whale that passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney problem.
